Tuesday at 2:00pm with Russ

It's Tuesday at 2:00pm! (PST Time: I live and work from Southern California)

Greetings to you!

Each week I send out a short leadership blog that's called "Tuesday at 2:00pm". The purpose of this is simply to provide a brief thought on leadership that you can read and think about in just a few minutes. I send it out every week at 2:00pm (PST) and encourage you to make an appointment with yourself to pause and think about the thing I'm writing about.

Russ...

LEADERSHIP QUOTE:

"You have to be really loyal to the people that supported you when you were coming up." Sylvester Stallone

What does this stir up? Either write me HERE or comment at the end of the blog post HERE.

A LITTLE BIT DEEPER:

This is the last quote from Sylvester Stallone that I'll share for July. I hope you've enjoyed these this month. You can read them all HERE.

I found this last quote a couple of weeks ago and thought it would be a great one to share.

With Stallone's story, he talks a lot about people that took a chance on him, people who invested in him and people who never left him. He's very grateful to people who walked with him, and this quote is just something that I think he lives out in his life. I don't know him or know his "people", but he appears to be thankful.

It's kind of obvious, but I think it is something that is easily forgotten.

In my life, sometimes I "forget" because...

  • I spend more time looking forward than looking back

  • An event or season was difficult, I often try to forget about it or I don't spend time dwelling on it.

  • I'm just busy

  • I'm self-centered and often am thinking only about myself

These aren't excuses, it's just reality.

What about you? What keeps you from remembering people who "showed up" for you again and again?

DEEPER STILL:

There are 2 really important questions to ask ourselves along this theme...

First: Who are the people that stood with me in my growth, my development, in difficult times, in seasons of joy?

I have an incredible list of people that have been faithful in my life and journey, and there is no way that I would be where I am today without their time, wisdom, love, grace and influence. My goal this week is to make a list of these people and then to thank them again for their role. I've tried to do this over the years, but it's something that needs to just be a part of my life rhythm. I'll call it gratitude!

Second: Who are YOU standing with today? Who are you investing in and rallying around?

I think we need to be intentional with this. I can't be "all things to all people" but I can identify a couple of people to go deeper with or to be available to.

This week, make a list of the people you're going to invest in and then make time in your life for them.

I'm reminded of the Apostle Paul and his "greetings" found in Romans 16 and in other records. He is "intentional" to greet, honor, affirm, celebrate, remind and thank a long list of friends who have influenced his life and the church.

What a great example of how we too should do the same to people who have been on the journey with us!

When will you make time this week to work on these 2 lists?

Things I'm Reading, Listening To and Watching This Week:

  • Simon Sinek shares this short article: "Genius Life Lessons from Sylvester Stallone"

  • I'm reading a book by Angela Duckworth called "GRIT". Interesting study on "passion & perseverance".

  • I often listen to podcasts that teach me things I know nothing about. On How I Built This, I enjoyed the podcast on the launch of the brand ON Shoes

  • I'm enjoying tracking, celebrating and watching the Olympics. Incredible athletes from around the globe!

  • If you live anywhere near an In-N-Out, there's a "not so secret menu" then there's a "secret menu". My go to order... Double Double, Protein Style, Grilled & Ray Onions, Green Chillies, extra Tomato. Fries with grilled onions and a Diet Lemonade.
