Tuesday at 2:00pm with Russ

It's Tuesday at 2:00pm! (PST Time: I live and work from Southern California)

Greetings to you!

Each week I send out a short leadership blog that's called "Tuesday at 2:00pm". The purpose of this is simply to provide a brief thought on leadership that you can read and think about in just a few minutes. I send it out every week at 2:00pm (PST) and encourage you to make an appointment with yourself to pause and think about the thing I'm writing about.

Russ...

LEADERSHIP QUOTE:

"If you don't fall, how are you going to know what getting up is like?" Steph Curry, NBA & Olympic Athlete

What does this stir up? Either write me HERE or comment at the end of the blog post HERE.

A LITTLE BIT DEEPER:

I've been captivated by the Olympics this past week, and just enjoy the competition, the global stage and the strength of so many athletes. This month, I'm just going to share some quotes from some of the Olympic athletes that I find inspiring.

I enjoyed watching some of the basketball games and highlights from the Olympics over the past weeks, and enjoyed a number of teams who made the games exciting and really competitive.

In the end, the USA won the gold medal, but every game was really good basketball.

One of my favorite players to watch is Steph Curry. He plays for the Warriors and was a leader on the Olympic team this year. He's an amazing ball handler and shooter, and he brings excitement every time he's on the floor.

While he's a great ball player, he's also a great person. Curry and his wife Ayesha are both philanthropic with their time and resources, and they look for ways to impact both the community where they live and the world. Curry talks about his love for God as his motivation in serving others.

The words from Curry above are just a good reminder. We look at someone that is very successful today, and we forget about the journey they've been on to get here. It didn't happen overnight, and it wasn't all easy.

This can be true of everyone obstacle Olympic athletes have faced and every obstacle you and I have faced.

Curry is just reminding us that "falling" and "getting back up" go hand in hand, and it's something that ALL of us have to experience.

What have you learned from "falls" in your life and how has that helped you today?

DEEPER STILL:

This past week I did Part 1 of a LifePlan with a leader who is trying to figure out where he's going! It's a great conversation but one of the early tools we work through is connecting significant moments from our past and identifying lessons we've learned from them. There was a moment when the truth of what was on the paper just jumped out, and there were some really important lessons to be learned.

When I did my LifePlan 10 years ago, I remember a moment when I looked at a significant period of my life, and there were some clear connections to my behavior today. For the first time, I identified the source of that behavior, which started 40 years earlier

Curry's reminder to us is to learn when we're down and learn when we're up, and to remember what that's like.

I do a couple of activities to keep these things in front of me:

  • Each year, I take some time to REMEMBER. I update my LifePlan, and look at things that happened this year in my life and pull out the lessons. This reflection is really important.

  • I'm learning that I need to identify these things as I go because it's so easy to forget them, so I take moments regularly to write things down, to reflect, to pull out lessons that I don't want to miss.

  • I look for opportunities to share these with others. Whether it be in a coaching conversation or a mentoring role, I share the things I'm learning along the way. I haven't got it all figured out yet, I'm still learning and growing.

Curry is just 36 years old, and he's learned a lot, had a great career and influence, and continues to make an impact. I believe he'll continue to impact others far beyond the basketball court simply because he wants to continue to learn and develop along the way.

That's what I want! What about you?

What do you do to learn and remember from moments of failure? What motivates you to grow from these times?

Things I'm Reading, Listening To and Watching This Week:

  • This week, Gina and I will celebrate 37 years of marriage. We have a concert and hotel to look forward to next week, but this week we'll just do a sunset Paddle session in the Dana Point Harbor. A great way to celebrate!

  • At our upcoming Barnabas Summit in 2 weeks, I'm looking forward to hearing from my friends at NOVO. I'm really inspired by their vision and impact around the world.

  • We just watched this file, The Instigators on Apple with Matt Damon & Casey Affleck. I always like Matt Damon and this was a different role for him.

  • I forgot about this show and realized I've missed 2 seasons! Now to catch up. Welcome to Wrexham is a really interesting documentary series on Football in Wales!

  • OK, this might seem like a small thing, but for years I've been pulling tape from a role of tape manually. I do this a lot in LifePlanning and Consulting. I just purchased this simply little dispenser and my life has changed! Why it took so long to discover this is beyond me!
