It's Tuesday at 2:00pm! (PST Time: I live and work from Southern California)
In this New Year I'm going to continue to explore some leadership quotes that might challenge us, inspire us or remind us of different aspects of the leadership journey. This is part of my personal journey to keep growing, learning and being stretched! Join me each Tuesday at 2:00pm (PST). It will take you just a few minutes to read through the 2 sections of this post, but don't miss the final section where I share some of the things I'm reading, listening to and enjoying this week.
You can find past posts on my website HERE.
Enjoy!
LEADERSHIP QUOTE:
“No-one wants to hear everything that's in your head. They just want you to live up to what comes out of your mouth." Adam Grant
What does this stir up? Either write me HERE or comment at the end of the blog post HERE.
A LITTLE BIT DEEPER:
We'll look at a couple more quotes from organizational psychologist and bestselling author, Adam Grant. You can see past posts HERE.
I traveled a little bit last week and as I caught up on the news, listened to a couple of podcasts and watched a couple of documentaries, this idea just kept coming up.
There is so much noise in the world.
People talking, saying whatever we want to, whether it be on social media or in interviews, yet I'm learning that what people say really doesn't have to correlate to what we do.
We can say anything we want to in order to appease you, to attract you or to offend you.
Words don't really matter much anymore, and I hate that.
The power of words are so important. We use words to encourage, to affirm, to direct, to honor and celebrate, to rebuke. We use words for everything, and when words become meaningless, it affects all of us.
However, words and actions, that's the goal.
Grant reminds us that these need to stay connected for us to have any lasting impact.
Do the words that come out of your mouth line-up with the actions that come out of your life?
DEEPER STILL:
I vividly remember the time I was driving a high school student in my car as a fairly young youth pastor. I was driving a little crazy and was getting upset with others on the road. I have no idea why, but it happened.
I remember looking at the student while I was driving and then it hit me.... I had stood up and taught this student for a while about what it meant to follow Christ, yet here I was, the professional & mature youth pastor, completely losing it while driving the car.
Fortunately I realized what I was doing and I apologized, caught myself, and realized what a horrible leader I was being. Fortunately that student showed me grace and he continued to trust me and hopefully listen to both my words and my actions in the years to come.
This is hard!
In 1 John we read: "My dear children (he's talking to ME!), let's not just talk about love; let's practice real love." (1 John 3:18 MSG)
Pay attention to the words that come out of your mouth, but also pay attention to how you're living your life on a daily basis! What about this challenges you the most?
Things I'm Reading, Listening To and Watching This Week:
Find out more about Adam Grant
I watched this great documentary on the Magic Johnson & Larry Bird Rivalry. Really enjoyed this look... You can find it on Apple, HBO, Amazon Prime and others... Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals.
Here's another documentary: Travelin' Band: Creedence Clearwater Revival at the Royal Albert Hall. Great story, great music!
I'm in my last book of this series, and just found out there's one more coming! I've enjoyed this Gray Man Series by Mark Greaney. I'm reading BURNER now, #12.
I also finished reading this short book called "The 4 Habits of Joy-Filled People". Really good stuff to think through and process! I recommend it to everyone!
