It's Tuesday at 2:00pm! (PST Time: I live and work from Southern California)
In this New Year I'm going to continue to explore some leadership quotes that might challenge us, inspire us or remind us of different aspects of the leadership journey. This is part of my personal journey to keep growing, learning and being stretched! Join me each Tuesday at 2:00pm (PST). It will take you just a few minutes to read through the 2 sections of this post, but don't miss the final section where I share some of the things I'm reading, listening to and enjoying this week.
You can find past posts on my website HERE.
Enjoy!
LEADERSHIP QUOTE:
"What we know matters, but who we are matters more." Brené Brown
What does this stir up? Either write me HERE or comment at the end of the blog post HERE.
A LITTLE BIT DEEPER:
I want to end this year with this simple quote and reminder from Brené Brown.
Brené Brown has done work and research on the topics of vulnerability and shame (to just name a few) for decades. Her Ted Talk on vulnerability is one of the most highly viewed videos on that platform. I've read a couple of her books and have heard her on a couple of podcasts and I've really been challenged by her.
I don't know how this note finds you today, but I know that for many of us there's a tension between "who we are" and "what we do or what we know". We are constantly trying to prove ourselves through our achievements and accomplishments and sometimes this forces us to be something that we're not.
Brené Browns simple quote from her book, Daring Greatly, was just a simple reminder that my identity, who I am, is what is most important, above all that I'm able to do and know.
How does that land with you today? This past year, have you struggled at all with your identify: who are are rather than what you do?
As we come to the end of this calendar year, it's a great time to do some personal assessment. I'll share more about that below.
DEEPER STILL:
I want to show you a simple self-assessment model that we use in LifePlanning that is a great tool to simply "take your pulse" or check in to see how you're doing today. It can be used in many different ways, but today I want to challenge you to think about it in the "IDENTITY SPACE". Answer the questions from a deeper perspective of where you're at personally, not addressing tasks, but feelings.
This is simply called 4 Helpful Lists from Tom Paterson and there are 4 questions to ask yourself:
#1). What is RIGHT? (how can I optimize the things that are right?)
#2) What is WRONG? (what needs to change?)
#3) What is CONFUSED? (what needs clarification?)
#4) What is MISSING? (what do I need to add?)
Just make a list of things after each question, and then spend some time thinking, praying, celebrating or working out how to address that in your life.
The exercise is used primarily to show some things that you wouldn't readily think of, but it also creates a template of things that you might need to pay attention to.
Be careful: This isn't supposed to become a To-Do List. This is simply used to help you identify and focus on some areas of your life where you need to pay some attention to.
Self Evaluation is a great tool to help us remember and focus on who we ARE and who we were created to BE.
Remember: God has created each of us with unique skills, talents, abilities, competencies and strengths. Don't forget that He has a plan for you!
Find some time over the next week to take a pulse and do some thoughtful evaluation on your "WHO".

My friends at Harbor Ministries share a great podcast called Higher Ground. I encourage you to listen to this short episode in the coming days.
Years ago I shared a daily planning tool, and I was asked about it recently. If you'd like to see this, find it on this resource page at the top: Today's Plan
This Christmas Wreaths Puzzle has been out on our table since Thanksgiving. It's a challenging one! Hopefully it will be done by New Years! (not too optimistic about that... come on family!!!)
I think all of the guys in my family started watching this season 2 of REACHER on Prime Video. I've read the books for years and like the character in this series.
