Tuesday at 2:00pm with Russ

It's Tuesday at 2:00pm! (PST Time: I live and work from Southern California)

I want to be a REAL leader.

I'm not saying that I'm not a leader, I just want to be REAL. In a world where leadership is being challenged, where sincerity is being questioned and where power and control is something to achieve, I don't want that. I want to be real.

We're talking about ONE THING that we're learning from some books, and today I want to share TWO THINGS, but they're connected. The two books I'm talking about are below:

Both of these books talk about being REAL.

Brad Lomenicks book, H3 Leadership shares 3 secrets every leader needs to understand to find leadership success. They are:

  • Be HUMBLE

  • Stay HUNGRY

  • Always HUSTLE

While all three are great, the "BE HUMBLE" is the one that stands out. I want to be around humble leaders.

Lomenick describes this as leaders who are "self aware". They know who they are, they know that it's not all about them, they have a clear calling, they know that they need others, they know their limitations. They're humble.

I heard a stat recently that talked about one of the biggest traits found in successful leaders is their ability to be "self aware". To understand who they are, what they can and can't do, and understand their limitations.

My one takeaway from this book is that I want to be a humble leader, and I'm realizing that it's difficult to find humble leaders to learn from, to model after and to spend time with.

From Lencioni's book, Getting Naked (don't panic about the title!), he simply shares through a business fable that "VULNERABILITY" is a critical quality in every leaders life. The ability to "NOT" have to have all the answers, to "NOT" have it all together all the time and to "BE REAL" with others.

Lencioni talks about 3 fears that leaders face:

  • The Fear of LOSING THE BUSINESS

  • The Fear of BEING EMBARRASSED

  • The Fear of FEELING INFERIOR

His challenge is to be real; to be yourself; to not try to fake it. That's the only way to address these fears.

So today, my ONE THING from these books is that I need to be REAL.

If you get caught up in the news, in social media, in professional sports, and in just about every arena, we are surrounded by leaders that do not model this.

My question today is:

"How can I BE REAL to those I serve with, to those I lead, to those I engage with?

I want to be a HUMBLE, VULNERABLE, REAL LEADER.

I'd like to ask you to share some of yours. Do it simply:

  • What's the book?

  • What's The One Thing that stands out to you (we all see different things)?

  • How has it made a difference?

Send it to me HERE and I'll share it with others reading this weekly post.

"On a team, trust is all about vulnerability, which is difficult for most people." Patrick Lencioni

"Meekness is not weakness. It's power under control. It's ambition grounded with humility and lived out in confidence, not arrogance." Brad Lomenick

"Humble yourself before the Lord, and he will exalt you." James 4:10

  • Things I'm Reading and Listening To This Week:

    • I listened to a great podcast this week that Gina recommended by Andy Stanley and Ian Morgan Cron called "Enneagram and Decision Making Part 1". If you use Enneagram, this conversation is helpful.

    • OK. I need to step off my Classic Rock Playlist, but I have to share one more. I listened to this playlist multiple times this weekend, and it brought back incredible memories of the early 80's. Let this music take you back! Styx Essentials

    • Brad Lomenicks book, H3 Leadership is a great read for every person in leadership: Be Humble, Stay Hungry, Always Hustle.

    • Patrick Lencioni (one of my all-time favorite authors) writes Getting Naked: A business fable about shedding the three fears that sabotage client loyalty.

    • Sorry, it's the NBA Finals this week, so I'm in Laker Mode! Is there anything else to watch?
