Tuesday at 2:00pm with Russ

It's Tuesday at 2:00pm! (PST Time: I live and work from Southern California)

In this New Year I'm going to continue to explore some leadership quotes that might challenge us, inspire us or remind us of different aspects of the leadership journey. This is part of my personal journey to keep growing, learning and being stretched! Join me each Tuesday at 2:00pm (PST). It will take you just a few minutes to read through the 2 sections of this post, but don't miss the final section where I share some of the things I'm reading, listening to and enjoying this week.

I also invite you to share your favorite quote with a short description of "why it's your favorite". Simply send it to me HERE and I'll post it in an upcoming Tuesday at 2:00pm.

You can find past posts on my website HERE.

Enjoy!

LEADERSHIP QUOTE:

“The best minute I spend is the one I invest in people."Ken Blanchard

What does this stir up? Either write me HERE or comment at the end of the blog post HERE.

A LITTLE BIT DEEPER:

Ken Blanchard and Spencer Johnson wrote the short book, The One Minute Manager in 1982 and it went on to become a best seller.

The premise is simple:

To be an effective manager, you need to create with each employee:

  • One Minute Goals

Clarity about what you're working on

  • One Minute Praisings

Affirm, encourage, praise and celebrate

  • One Minute Redirects or Reprimands

Correct, critique and hold people accountable

Blanchard has written many books on management and leadership, but he always comes back to that idea of a "leadership investment", which is where this quote comes from.

Spending a minute investing in someones life and leadership is a great way to spend your time and use your influence.

How are you doing in this area?

  • Do you choose TASKS over PEOPLE?

  • Do you position and make yourself AVAILABLE to others?

  • Do you see people as a BURDEN or as a VALUE?

This week, why don't you INVEST in some people by simply spending time with them: Take initiative, listen to them, be approachable.

DEEPER STILL:

One of my mentors in college did a great job of doing this. I was serving as the Student Body President, and he would walk into my office, often casually walking by, and he would sit down and he would do 3 things:

  • He would ask me how I'm doing and what I'm working on

  • He would celebrate something that I had done or said

  • He would challenge me to think about something

It's interesting, I never considered his "challenge" as a "reprimand or rebuke" because the way he would frame it pushed me to want to do something better. Now as I look back, he had a very simple and subtle way of coming alongside of me, and in a few short moments, he invested in my leadership. When I left my office, I was always encouraged and ready to go!

That was a gift! The short moments that he walked into my office was an investment into me and my leadership.

Tom Peters coined this phrase: "Management by walking around" and the idea was for a manager to roam around in an unstructured way and look for ways to connect, engage and empower their team members.

Who has invested into your life and leadership by simply speaking into you and making time for you?

Things I'm Reading, Listening To and Watching This Week:

  • OK, I made Ceviche de Camaron (Shrimp) for the first time this past weekend. I followed Laylita's Recipe (which Gina handed to me to use!) and it came out great! I love ceviche and now I can make it! It's a good day!

  • My favorite Ken Blanchard book: The New One Minute Manager

  • I found a couple of chapters of this book really interesting: 7 Things Resilient People do Differently by Akash Karia

  • The SPACE Podcast from Harbor was really good this past week. Check it out HERE.

  • Just became aware of this Musicians Website this week: Sweetwater. Enjoyed digging around and looking at some great instruments!
