Tuesday at 2:00pm with Russ

It's Tuesday at 2:00pm! (PST Time: I live and work from Southern California)

In this New Year I'm going to continue to explore some leadership quotes that might challenge us, inspire us or remind us of different aspects of the leadership journey. This is part of my personal journey to keep growing, learning and being stretched! Join me each Tuesday at 2:00pm (PST). It will take you just a few minutes to read through the 2 sections of this post, but don't miss the final section where I share some of the things I'm reading, listening to and enjoying this week.

I also invite you to share your favorite quote with a short description of "why it's your favorite". Simply send it to me HERE and I'll post it in an upcoming Tuesday at 2:00pm.

You can find past posts on my website HERE.

Enjoy!

LEADERSHIP QUOTE:

“None of us is as smart as all of us." Ken Blanchard

What does this stir up? Either write me HERE or comment at the end of the blog post HERE.

A LITTLE BIT DEEPER:

I'm sharing 2 more of Ken Blanchards quotes this month, and I coudn't ignore this classic.

He says this so simply, but the meaning is profound:

We are better when we are connected to others and each bring our own gifts, strengths, talents, experience and passion to the table.

The multiplier on this can't really be measured.

We're better TOGETHER than on our OWN.

The wisdom from Ecclesiastes 4 backs up Blanchards quote:

"It's better to have a partner than go it alone. Share the work, share the wealth. And if one falls down, the other helps, but if there's no one to help, tough! Two in a bed warm each other. Alone, you shiver all night. By yourself you're unprotected. With a friend you can face the worst. Can you round up a third? A three-stranded rope isn't easily snapped." (MSG)

Do you have people that come around you that make you better? Are you trying to figure things out on your own?

DEEPER STILL:

I've shared this story before but when I began my first job as a part-time Youth Pastor back in 1986, I assumed that it was my job to do everything myself. We had a volunteer staff, but in my vast 21 years of experience (I was 21 years old), I thought I was supposed to do it all. I quickly "grew" our youth group from about 150 students to just a handful. I have no idea why I wasn't fired, but instead I was challenged to grow and to get better, but I didn't know how to do that, so I began to "rely" on this volunteer staff.

I soon learned that they cared deeply for these students, they had already established relationships with them and they had some great ideas about what would work and what wouldn't work.

What followed was an incredible season of growth for me personally, and for our youth group. We became a team, and as we each used our skills and abilities, we were able to engage with many more students then a young 21-year old ever could have.

I learned the value of team first-hand and it changed the way I've led ever since.

Blanchards quote is simple, true, and sometimes very difficult to put into practice!

Think of a time in your leadership where you surrounded yourself with others who made the result of your work so much better? Are you doing this now? Why or why not?
