Tuesday at 2:00pm with Russ

It's Tuesday at 2:00pm! (PST Time: I live and work from Southern California)

In this New Year I'm going to continue to explore some leadership quotes that might challenge us, inspire us or remind us of different aspects of the leadership journey. This is part of my personal journey to keep growing, learning and being stretched! Join me each Tuesday at 2:00pm (PST). It will take you just a few minutes to read through the 2 sections of this post, but don't miss the final section where I share some of the things I'm reading, listening to and enjoying this week.

You can find past posts on my website HERE.

Enjoy!

LEADERSHIP QUOTE:

“The difference between a good leader and a great leader is humility." Jim Collins

What does this stir up? Either write me HERE or comment at the end of the blog post HERE.

A LITTLE BIT DEEPER:

I'm going to share 2 more quotes from Jim Collins.

Think about the quote above: What is humility in leadership?

While Jim Collins makes this statement, Jesus tells us exactly what it means. In Mathew 23 Jesus says:

"Do you want to stand out? Then step down. Be a servant. If you puff yourself up, you'll get the wind knocked out of you. But if you're content to simply be yourself, your life will count for plenty." (MSG)

"The greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted." (ESV)

We all know people who are humble leaders. We're drawn to them, we learn from them, we follow them and we want to be like them.

Are you a humble leader? What does that look like in your life and leadership?

DEEPER STILL:

In a MasterClass article called Humility in Leadership, we're given 5 simple ways to practice humility. There are many more, but are you doing these?

The bullet points are theirs, the comments are mine:

  • Ask Questions: When you ask questions, it show's your interested in what others are thinking and have to say.

  • Encourage New Ideas: All of the ideas don't have to be yours! Help others contribute and you'll be surprised at what they bring that may be much better than your own ideas!

  • Practice Compassion: Let compassion ooze out of you at every turn. Give people the benefit of doubt and treat them the way you'd like to be treated.

  • Prioritize Learning: "When leaders prioritize learning, they communicate to their teams that everyone has room for curiosity and growth." (MasterClass)

  • Take Responsibility: You're the leader and you need to stand up and take responsibility for your team, when things are going well and when they're not.

There are other ways to show humility: Don't always be first, don't do all the talking, affirm others continually, be willing to do the jobs others don't want to do, don't isolate yourself, celebrate team and individual success, be generous with praise....

Jesus said, "If you want to be great, then step down"

How are you modeling humble leadership with your team and your family? Would they call you a humble leader?
