It's Tuesday at 2:00pm! (PST Time: I live and work from Southern California)

LEADERSHIP QUOTES

I'm going to spend a few weeks looking at some great quotes. Over the past few weeks we've looked at quotes from Genghis Khan, Eleanor Roosevelt, Ghandi, Steve Jobs, Avot de Rabbi Natan, Abraham Maslow, Stephen R. Covey, Seth Godin, Patrick Lencioni and Brené Brown. You can read these posts HERE.

The format for this season is the following:

#1) LEADERSHIP QUOTE: I'm going to share a quote with you. I'd like to encourage you to think about it, respond to it, process it. You can stop here, or go to Section 2.

#2) A LITTLE BIT DEEPER: I'm going to share a couple of thoughts that come to my mind when I think about the quote. Just a short reaction from me. You can stop here, or go to Section 3.

#3) DEEPER STILL: I'm going to share something I've found from someone else: A quote, some tips, a challenge, a thought....

#4) RUSS' LIST: I'll continue to share some links, ideas, books or products that I think some of you might benefit from.

LEADERSHIP QUOTE:

"Time You Enjoy Wasting Is Not Wasted Time." John Lennon... and Others

What does this stir up? Either write me HERE or comment at the end of the blog post HERE.

A LITTLE BIT DEEPER:

I saw this quote and I stopped to think about it, then I did some research and found that there are a number of people that are attributed to this quote including Bertrand Russell, T.S. Elliot and Kierkegaard. Lennon just repeated it, and I'll repeat it as well.

Look at the simple words of this quote:

"Time You Enjoy Wasting..."

It's easy to think about all the time I waste. I spend time doing things I don't need to do, and sometimes I feel guilty about this and sometimes I just move on.

This thought is more about being INTENTIONAL. When I waste some of my time, and I enjoy that, it's no longer wasted time.

Last night I stayed up late watching a recording of a golf match. As the match went on, it went into playoff holes, and I stayed up way to late to see who would finally win. It was a great thing to watch, I was into it and I didn't complain at all about going to bed after midnight! I enjoyed wasting that time, and this morning when I crawled out of bed I didn't complain about being tired, but instead I relived that late-night playoff and it was all worth it.

I know what you're thinking: "You get excited about a golf playoff?"

That's not the point.

What do you choose to waste time on? What do you do intentionally with your time? That's the question.

DEEPER STILL:

When we think about RHYTHMS of our life, we need to remember that rest, relationships, recreation, silence, and space are all part of what we need regularly.

Jesus modeled this when he fell asleep in the middle of the storm, when he went to pray while the people were asking for his miracles, and when he left the crowds to be with his disciples.

We need to give ourselves permission to "waste time" especially when it's part of a replenishment cycle in our lives.

Instead of managing your time to the minute, LEAD your time by creating space for these rhythms, these replenishment cycles, and for just finding joy.

Things I'm Reading, Listening To and Watching This Week:

  • A great way to begin looking at how to lead and manage your life is to dig into this incredible book by Stephen R. Covey, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

  • The Masters Program is a 3-year program in personal leadership. I encourage you to consider it. I was challenged in how I "lead my time" and how this affects the rhythms of my life.

  • One of the most significant aspects of a Personal LifePlan is a whole section on replenishment and time. This 2-day process will help you prioritize your time and determine what you need to live with healthy rhythms and margins in your life.

  • I use BETTERMENT for some online banking and savings. I like their app and it's easy to see where we're at.

  • I just re-read this short book, The Treasure Principle by Randy Alcorn. Really good truths about money and my role and responsibility with it.

  • OK, just because of the quote, you have listen to the Eagles sing Wasted Time.
