It's Tuesday at 2:00pm! (PST Time: I live and work from Southern California)
LEADERSHIP QUOTES
I'm going to spend a few weeks looking at some great quotes. Over the past few weeks we've looked at quotes from Genghis Khan, Eleanor Roosevelt, Ghandi, Steve Jobs, Avot de Rabbi Natan, Abraham Maslow, Stephen R. Covey, Seth Godin, Patrick Lencioni, Brené Brown and John Lennon. You can read these posts HERE.
The format for this season is the following:
#1) LEADERSHIP QUOTE: I'm going to share a quote with you. I'd like to encourage you to think about it, respond to it, process it. You can stop here, or go to Section 2.
#2) A LITTLE BIT DEEPER: I'm going to share a couple of thoughts that come to my mind when I think about the quote. Just a short reaction from me. You can stop here, or go to Section 3.
#3) DEEPER STILL: I'm going to share something I've found from someone else: A quote, some tips, a challenge, a thought....
#4) RUSS' LIST: I'll continue to share some links, ideas, books or products that I think some of you might benefit from.
Russ
LEADERSHIP QUOTE:
"A genius does many things, but only one at a time." Matthew McConaughey, Greenlights
What does this stir up? Either write me HERE or comment at the end of the blog post HERE.
A LITTLE BIT DEEPER:
I listened to this book from Matthew McConaughey, and he said this short line. I stopped where I was walking, wrote it down, then continued on my walk. I went back to try to find it, and couldn't find it. I then searched for it online, and couldn't find it.
Maybe this line was just for me today. Maybe it's for you.
So many times, I do a lot of things at the same time, thinking that I'm really skilled and gifted. I can keep the plates all spinning with very little breakage, and I amaze myself with my multi-tasking ability.
The reality is that in my attempt to keep the plates spinning, I'm not doing anything really well. Instead, I'm doing everything with mediocrity.
When did our ability to be good at multi-tasking become a skill that we all aspire to?
Watch this "Plate Spinning Fail". Do you relate to this? I relate more to this image of plate-spinning.
How is your "plate-spinning" going? Are you losing sight of what's most important? Is there "breakage" happening?
DEEPER STILL:
Jesus wants to make things simpler. We often make things more complicated.
In Matthew 22 he instructs us to "Love the Lord Your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind... And love your neighbor as yourself." He summarized all of the law into these 2 things.
He also said in Matthew 11:28-30 "Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me - watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly." (MSG)
He wants to make our lives simpler, more intentional. We want to make them busier, with more plate-spinning, more multi-tasking, and more chaos.
When will you learn? When will I learn?
This week, what can you do to SIMPLIFY your life? What plate can you stop spinning forever? What do you need to do in order to recover your life?
Things I'm Reading, Listening To and Watching This Week:
One of the ways I manage the growing list in my head is to constantly be writing, thinking, brainstorming and recording things. I usually always have a Moleskin Journal with me. I've found when I write things down, it creates space in my mind to focus on other things. It's a habit I started years ago, and my friend Aaron got me a great leather cover for it, and it goes with me everywhere! Figure out what works for you, but writing things down will help relieve the pressure.
This little speaker, the Bose Thunderflash, puts out a great sound, is waterproof, and it's easy to travel with. My GO TO, and I got the orange one! (of course)
3 Great Books that talk about TIME: Indistractable by Nir Eyal; Getting Things Done by David Allen; Deep Work by Cal Newport
I use this To-Do App to help me manage the demands of life, work, and schedule. Todoist has become something I depend on to keep my sanity!
This week I listened to The Jackson 5 Essential Playlist on Apple. They had some great music in the 70's that is still just as good!
