Tuesday at 2:00pm with Russ

It's Tuesday at 2:00pm! (PST Time: I live and work from Southern California)

Currently, I'm exploring different leadership quotes on this blog post, and pulling out some application for all of us. This is part of my personal journey to keep growing, learning and being stretched! Join me each Tuesday at 2:00pm (PST). It will take you just a few minutes to read through the 2 sections of this post, but don't miss the final section where I share some of the things I'm reading, listening to and enjoying this week.

LEADERSHIP QUOTE:

"If you are working on something exciting that you really care about, you don't have to be pushed. The vision pulls you." Steve Jobs

What does this stir up? Either write me HERE or comment at the end of the blog post HERE.

A LITTLE BIT DEEPER:

Years ago, while attending a coaching training session, the idea of vision was shared this way:

Imagine you're standing on top of a mountain, and you see the peak of another mountain off in the distance, and you decide that this is where you want to go, but there's a valley between these peaks, and you need to get from here to there. This is called VISION.

Vision can be described as:

  • The DESIRE to get from where you are to where you want to be.

  • The PLAN to get from where you are to where you want to be.

  • The EXECUTION to move from where you are today to where you want to be tomorrow.

It's not enough to just see that other mountain top, but there needs to be a plan to get there.

I like this thought from Steve Jobs when he says, "...The vision pulls you."

When you can articulate where you're going, you are pulled in that direction. Every decision you make either moves you closer or moves you further away.

What mountain peak are you looking at or looking for? Can you see where you're going or where you want to be? Does that vision "compel" you forward or do you feel like you're stuck?

DEEPER STILL:

Dave Ramsey, in his book EntreLeadership teaches that "goals are your vision in bite-sized chunks."

This a great way to look at how to get from HERE to THERE: Simply create some goals, some baby-steps, some action that moves you towards that vision, and you're on your way.

We don't move towards our vision because:

  • We don't DEFINE IT

  • We don't MAP HOW TO GET THERE

  • We don't MAKE IT A PART OF OUR SCHEDULE

  • We don't MEASURE OUR PROGRESS

  • We don't STAY FOCUSED ON THE VISION

There are so many ways to get lost in our journey from where we're at today to where we want to be tomorrow. But this doesn't mean you don't keep moving towards the goal, towards the prize. "The vision pulls you."

Wherever you're at today, get back on track: Find your way, start again, remember where it is you want to get to, and find a way to move in that direction.
