Tuesday at 2:00pm with Russ

It's Tuesday at 2:00pm! (PST Time: I live and work from Southern California)

Currently, I'm exploring different leadership quotes on this blog post, and pulling out some application for all of us. This is part of my personal journey to keep growing, learning and being stretched! Join me each Tuesday at 2:00pm (PST). It will take you just a few minutes to read through the 2 sections of this post, but don't miss the final section where I share some of the things I'm reading, listening to and enjoying this week.

LEADERSHIP QUOTE:

"Everyone is a moon and has a dark side which he never shows to anybody." Mark Twain

What does this stir up? Either write me HERE or comment at the end of the blog post HERE.

A LITTLE BIT DEEPER:

I'm diving into some great quotes from some famous authors of the past, and I've had a handful just jump out at me. Take a look at the past 3 quotes HERE, and today I discovered this quote from Mark Twain.

Twain was simply making an observation about people when he compared them to the moon:  We can never see the full moon, or both sides of the moon, and people are like this.  Often people just want us to see their "good side" or the "sunny side", but the reality is that everyone has a "dark side" or better said, a "hidden side".

When we say DARK it sounds so mysterious and maybe evil.  That might be the case, but I think Twain was simply saying that there are things that we never show to other people, we keep some things hidden. He doesn't say this is bad, but is simply making an observation.

What do you think he is saying?

Do you agree that everyone has a side of their lives that they keep hidden?

What about you? Are there things in your life that you don't want anyone else to see?

DEEPER STILL:

I was talking about Life Coaching today with someone, and I made this comment that connects with this quote. I'm not sure who said it, but I resonate with it:

"We need to hear from people who aren't impressed by us. We need to hear from people who care about us and who want to know who we really are."

The conversation about Life Coaching is just that:  My job as a coach is to ask you questions to help you figure out what you should or shouldn't do. I'm your guide, and I'm not going to be impressed by you, but I want to challenge you to be who you really are.

Do you have people in your life who are not impressed by you and your abilities & charm? Are there people in your life who have seen the "Dark Side" or the side of you that not many other people have seen?

We need these people in our lives, because as Twain said it.... "Everyone is a moon..."

Identify 2 people in your life who you can be honest and real with? Have you thanked them for being in your life?

Things I'm Reading, Listening To and Watching This Week:

  • A great organization in Orange County, CA is doing some really innovative things around hunger and job training. Check out Bracken's Kitchen, and if you're local, come to their event this week, "Hungry Games 5.0".

  • I loaned this book to a friend of mine this week, and then had to order another copy. I spent some time re-reading some of the pages. This was a very influential book in my life a couple of years ago. Read Small Giants from Bo Burlingham

  • I listen to The Holy Post with Phil Vischer and Skye Jethani for some different perspective on hot topics. I don't always agree, but it's a great way to hear from 2 people I respect.

  • I listed to One Republic Essentials this week. I saw them in concert last year and enjoyed hearing some of their music again.

  • Another local business... My neighbors run a great golf center called "No Bogeys Golf". Clubs, lessons and simulators. I'm learning a lot!
