It's Tuesday at 2:00pm! (PST Time: I live and work from Southern California)
In this New Year I'm going to continue to explore some leadership quotes that might challenge us, inspire us or remind us of different aspects of the leadership journey. This is part of my personal journey to keep growing, learning and being stretched! Join me each Tuesday at 2:00pm (PST). It will take you just a few minutes to read through the 2 sections of this post, but don't miss the final section where I share some of the things I'm reading, listening to and enjoying this week.
I also invite you to share your favorite quote with a short description of "why it's your favorite". Simply send it to me HERE and I'll post it in an upcoming Tuesday at 2:00pm.
You can find past posts on my website HERE.
Enjoy!
LEADERSHIP QUOTE:
“Habits are not a finish line to be crossed, they are a lifestyle to be lived.” James Clear
What does this stir up? Either write me HERE or comment at the end of the blog post HERE.
A LITTLE BIT DEEPER:
We're spending the month with James Clear and some thoughts from his book Atomic Habits.
I think sometimes we confuse a HABIT with a GOAL.
"Goals are aspirations you set for yourself, and can be small or big. Goals are a great way to prioritize behavior and measure success; however, they are not very effective at creating changes in behavior. On the other hand, habits are the routines you develop through constant practice, and they happen subconsciously." (Flow Fitness)
What do you think of this? Is this how you determine the difference between a HABIT and a GOAL?
The quote above from Clear makes sense to me and I think for years I tried to accomplish goals in my life but I didn't create habits to get to these goals.
Think of a couple of GOALS you have for this year, and think of a couple of HABITS you want to create in your life this year. How are these different?
DEEPER STILL:
Thanks to those who shared some of your February HABITS with me.
It's not too late to dive into creating new rhythms by taking some baby steps.
I shared with you that I was going to start using my Rowing Machine for 5 minutes a day. I started on the 1st, and over the first 7 days of February, I successfully rowed 6 out of 7 days.
The first rule from the Atomic Habits book was to MAKE IT OBVIOUS. In order for me to do that, I shared my goal with you and others, I put my rower in a spot that I can easily get to, and I see if regularly to remind me, and I just did it this week. I missed one day because a friend was visiting, and honestly, I just forgot. Not a big deal... start again the next day.
The second rule from the Atomic Habits book is MAKE IT ATTRACTIVE. The idea is to somehow make the action more appealing. For me, I listen to a podcast or music when I row, or I'll row before I have dinner, just as a motivator. What can you do to make your habit more attractive by "tempting" yourself to do it.
Example, yesterday I wanted to listen to an interview podcast with one of my favorite authors. Instead of sitting at home and listening I went for a walk. I didn't even realize that I had walked 4.5 miles because I was completely involved in the interview.
Find ways to make what you're working on more attractive! What would help you to create that habit? What would make it easier to keep it as a priority?
Things I'm Reading, Listening To and Watching This Week:
Read Atomic Habits or listen to it. It's an encouraging book about change, habits and results!
Someone asked me what rower I have at home. I have a Concept 2 and I really like it. I used it first at a local gym, and during Covid purchased one for my home.
I'm doing some work using the Flywheel Model from Jim Collins. Really interesting process. Check out his short monograph on the topic.
I'll continue to endorse this book by John Eldredge called "Resilient" as I work through it again and use the Pause App for a deeper dive into resilience with some daily practices.
I'm still enjoying Jedidiah Coffee in the morning. Check out this local roaster in Southern California!
