It's Tuesday at 2:00pm! (PST Time: I live and work from Southern California)
In this New Year I'm going to continue to explore some leadership quotes that might challenge us, inspire us or remind us of different aspects of the leadership journey. This is part of my personal journey to keep growing, learning and being stretched! Join me each Tuesday at 2:00pm (PST). It will take you just a few minutes to read through the 2 sections of this post, but don't miss the final section where I share some of the things I'm reading, listening to and enjoying this week.
You can find past posts on my website HERE.
Enjoy!
LEADERSHIP QUOTE:
“Making better choices takes work. There is a daily give and take, but it is worth the effort."Tom Rath
What does this stir up? Either write me HERE or comment at the end of the blog post HERE.
A LITTLE BIT DEEPER:
Last thought from Tom Rath. I started with a quote from on health, and then we spent some time talking about teams and strengths. Today I'm reminded of this thought above from his book, Eat, Move Sleep.
Early this month as we began looking at some of Rath's work I shared about "movement" and his journey with health.
This quote today is such a good reminder to me, because I have a tendency to make "worse" choices... not because I want to, but because it's just easier sometimes.
I'm reminded that when I do the work, there is a reward!
James Clear talks about this in the book, Atomic Habits. He talks about the value of immediate rewards, but he also says this:
"The reward is on the other side of sacrifice."
You see that reward after doing the work!
While Rath is talking about health here, making better choices can apply to many things.
When you read that line, "making better choices takes work", what is the first thing you think about?
DEEPER STILL:
When I think about "making better choices" a couple of things jump out at me...
First, I think about what I EAT. The idea that sometimes when I'm in a hurry, I make bad decisions, but also sometimes I just give in to "temptation", especially when ordering the Reuban Sandwich instead of having the salad! I don't want to do the WORK.
Second, I think about my REST. I'll stay up late watching a movie on TV that I've seen 20 times. I know how it ends, I know I should go to bed, but there's something about that final game scene in Hoosiers, or the battle scene in Gladiator or the chase scene in Bourne Identity that just draws me in, and I make the BAD decision to stay up late instead of focusing on the rest I need.
Third, I think about my TIME. There are things I value and want to make time for, but I'm constantly making compromises and many times I lose out on the things I want and need to do for the sake of the things I HAVE to do. The work required here is simply learning to manage and discipline my time better to get it all done. That takes work.
What can you do practically about the "better decisions" items you identified earlier?
Things I'm Reading, Listening To and Watching This Week:
I picked up one of these portable chargers for my phone and pad, and it works great! MyCharge.
I took a couple of friends from Central Asia to a great steakhouse the other day and I was reminded what a unique place North Woods Inn really is! Gina wasn't happy I went without here!
OK, I'm still reading the Mark Greaney book series, Gray Man. I'm now on book #5, Back Blast.
Speaking of old movies... the other night I watched Warrior. It's a great story, a little brutal, but one I re-watched instead of going to bed!
