Tuesday at 2:00pm with Russ

It's Tuesday at 2:00pm! (PST Time: I live and work from Southern California)

In this New Year I'm going to continue to explore some leadership quotes that might challenge us, inspire us or remind us of different aspects of the leadership journey. This is part of my personal journey to keep growing, learning and being stretched! Join me each Tuesday at 2:00pm (PST). It will take you just a few minutes to read through the 2 sections of this post, but don't miss the final section where I share some of the things I'm reading, listening to and enjoying this week.

You can find past posts on my website HERE.

Enjoy!

LEADERSHIP QUOTE:

“You won't be a leader worth following if you don't lead yourself well." Andy Stanley

What does this stir up? Either write me HERE or comment at the end of the blog post HERE.

A LITTLE BIT DEEPER:

I've been a "follower" of Andy Stanley for years, reading his books, listening to his sermons and podcasts, and learning from him from afar. He continues to challenge me and teach me, so we'll spend some time this month looking at a few of the things he has said over the years.

If you've ever heard him speak, you know that he speaks very fast, so often I miss some great stuff from him. We'll slow it down and look at 4 quotes from him this month.

Be sure to check some of the materials of his I reference below. He has some great resources and tools that are available.

The quote above is something that Stanley speaks about often, and it's something I've been challenged by him in my own leadership and life.

I don't know Andy Stanley personally, but from the things others say about him, from his books and his focus on personal leadership and his ability to "last" in leadership, I believe this is something that not only does he teach, but he models in his own life as well.

What does "leading yourself well" look like in your life? What is the first thing you think about?

DEEPER STILL:

I just got back from taking some days off. It was a vacation that was focused on some "self-care" for Gina and I. Lot's of time to sleep, read, rest, enjoy time with friends and just get off the grid for a while.

When I think of "leading myself well", the first thing that comes to mind is the "state of my soul". I have a number of intentional conversations with some close friends regularly about "my soul", and it always begins with the pace of my life, my level of anxiety and the load I'm carrying.

Intentional time of rest does more for my leadership than just about anything else. I restore, renew, get a fresh perspective, and am usually able to identify some new excitement and vision for what it is God has called me into.

That's how I feel today: Rested and Ready to Go!

But first, let's take one more day to celebrate the independence of my country, the United States of America. Today is the 4th of July, and we'll pause in thanksgiving and in prayer for our country for all that has been and all that is to come!

How is the "state of your soul"? What can you do TODAY to address your wellbeing?

Things I'm Reading, Listening To and Watching This Week:

  • Find out more about Andy Stanley on his website.

  • Stanley has written many books, but 2 that stand out to me from all of his resources are: Visioneering, on personal vision and The Principle of the Path, on goals.

  • One of the greatest albums ever... Boston:Don't Look Back. When was the last time your listened to this one? I just did... again!

  • I watched a great series on tennis on Netflix last week, Break Point. Really good look at tennis and all that comes with the tour.

  • I began watching a series on Apple TV called Your Honor with Bryan Cranston. A little intense but really good. Now starting season 2.
