JUST GET MOVING
The year was 1976, and as a 7th grader my dad took me to see a new movie that had just come out.. Rocky. The story of an boxer who was given the chance of a lifetime to fight the world champion. The movie was a great story and inspirational. The morning after watching the movie, I joined boys around the world by starting the day drinking 5 raw eggs, just like Rocky did.
This past week, my wife and I had about 3 hours in the city of Philadelphia. We were there at 6:00am on a Sunday Morning, so we had to settle with a drive by of the Liberty Bell and some of the sights in the city, but we did get to see the iconic Rocky statue.
There are a couple of scenes in the movie that show Rocky training. In an early scene, he's working hard, he's barely able to make it up the steps in the city, but later in the movie, after his training, he's ready, and we see him run up the steps anticipating the fight. Here's the clip:
When I was trying to figure out where the famous steps were from the airport, I read a number of stories of how that scene in the movie had served as an inspiration to people. It's one of the most visited sites in Philly. People come there to exercise. They come when they're facing something impossible, they come when they need hope. It's become a place of encouragement and people from all over the world run up those steps. After filming the Rocky Movies, Sylvester Stallone donated the Rocky statue to the city of Philadelphia, and it stands at the base of those steps.
It's January 21st.
Some of us need to get moving. We've been talking about our goals, figuring out our priorities, but we've had a difficult time just getting started.
Rocky got up early. He downed some raw eggs. He put on an old pair of sweats, and he started running.
Is it time to get started doing the things you know you want to do, the things you need to do, the things you should do?
As Rocky has inspired people for years to do something impossible, may my reminder this morning simply encourage you to get started doing that thing, that one thing that will move you to greater significance and impact.
"Every champion was once a contender who refused to give up." Rocky Balboa
"It ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward." Rocky Balboa
"Our greatest glory is not in falling, but rising every time we fall." Rocky Balboa
"When you write things down, they sometimes take you places you hadn't planned." Melanie Benjamin
