Tuesday at 2:00pm with Russ

It's Tuesday at 2:00pm! (PST Time: I live and work from Southern California)

Currently, I'm exploring different leadership quotes on this blog post, and pulling out some application for all of us. This is part of my personal journey to keep growing, learning and being stretched! Join me each Tuesday at 2:00pm (PST). It will take you just a few minutes to read through the 2 sections of this post, but don't miss the final section where I share some of the things I'm reading, listening to and enjoying this week.

LEADERSHIP QUOTE:

"Beautiful things don't ask for attention." The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

What does this stir up? Either write me HERE or comment at the end of the blog post HERE.

A LITTLE BIT DEEPER:

A couple more weeks and quotes from this film, "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and then we'll move on.

Think about that line above:  "Beautiful things don't ask for attention."

I found this thought from Brian J. Hertzog on this line:

"Beautiful things don't ask for attention:  Nor do they beg, cry, pander, hustle, bribe, or coerce. Intrinsic beauty radiates outward from its source. It doesn't launch multimillion dollar marketing campaigns to garner attention for itself. Truly beautiful things are just noticed. Then, one by one, other people start calling attention to them to share in their splendor."

I love that description of this quote and Hertzog captures this concept of beauty really well.

Think of something beautiful that you've seen or that you've witnessed.  How did you find it?

DEEPER STILL:

Hertzog goes on to share a quote from Walter Payton, the great Bears football player: "You tell people when you're good at something, but people tell you when you're great."

It's a similar idea: Sometimes you don't have to draw attention to beauty or greatness, it will just be recognized.

To me, this is encouraging me to stop trying so hard.

  • When I'm able to do something significant, I don't need to tell people I did it... I don't need to draw the attention to myself. People will see if they're looking.

  • I don't need to post everything about my life on social media, I need to simply live my life, for an audience of ONE.

  • Beauty is something that people want to share with others and it's shared naturally, spontaneously and personally.

Sean Penn plays a character in Walter Mitty of Sean O'Connell the photographer. His great line In the movie is when he chooses to NOT take a picture and just says: "If I like a moment, I mean, me, personally... I don't like to have the distraction of the camera. I just want to stay in it, right there... right here."   It's profound and memorable.

What are you missing because you're spending so much time trying to get others to see you, to see what you're doing, trying to capture everything that happens... what are you missing?

Things I'm Reading, Listening To and Watching This Week:

  • I just listened to this book on Audible, but I wanted to recommend it: The Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons Learned from 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company. I was encouraged to read this book and I just finished it. Great practical leadership lessons sprinkled into a crazy story of mergers, acquisitions and the growth of a company under Robert Igor. I really enjoyed the book.

  • Some great music on Jack Johnson Essentials.

  • I mentioned this FIND a couple of years ago as Gina and I lived on these pizza's from Costco, but last night we enjoyed the first one in a long time and remembered how good they are: Milton's Cauliflower Crust Pizza/Roasted Vegetable

  • Gina and I are into another season of ALONE. For some reason, the craziness of these adventures and the extreme situations just draw us in. Check it out. We're watching season 8 and it's filled with Grizzly Bears.

  • Just have to give a shoutout to the Los Angeles Dodgers. What a great season... what a short-lived post-season. Go Blue!
